Hamburg remains brown-white

Finally a Hamburg duel again, after a break of seven and a half years – and then that: St. Pauli is the last Derby winner with a 0:0. The HSV seems insecure, Lewis Holtby later burst his collar.

St. Paulis coach made no secret of his destructive plan after the derby. “We wanted to avoid the soccer exchange of blows,” said Markus Kauczinski. The tactics of the defensive guests worked out, but for the 57,000 spectators it was a tough second league Sunday afternoon. St. Pauli defended 90 minutes concentrated. In 90 minutes, Hamburger SV struggled to the best of its ability to play out clear final situations or – with increasing playing time – at least to force them somehow. “We knew they had problems with that,” said St. Paulis Christopher Buchtmann. A footballerically disappointing city derby ended with the only appropriate result: 0:0.

Even if there was no winner: St. Pauli remains “city champion”. Of course this is not a real title – except for the club that is allowed to wear it. For exactly 2783 days FC St. Pauli can call itself that, at least until the second weekend in March 2019 Hamburg will remain brown and white. In February 2011 Gerald Asamoah had decided the Derby in the Volkspark in favour of the guests.

By the way, this was the last Bundesliga victory for FC St. Pauli to date. St. Pauli only scored a single point from the remaining twelve games of the season, relegated to last place in the table and shamefully left HSV behind in the upper house.

Some even claim that this goal alone explains the vehemence with which HSV had worked towards relegation in the following years. To somehow get the chance to get this title back. Where were you when Asamoah scored? If you can hold your own with one of these two clubs, you can answer that question without hesitation.

The new edition on Sunday will not be remembered, even if the setting was first class. St. Paulis Philipp Ziereis: “It was absolutely awesome, the atmosphere was outstanding”. At least until the 57,000 spectators understood what kind of football they had bought expensive tickets for. On the other hand, those who go to the derby are attracted by the emotions.

The atmosphere in the city had been nervous. A raid on a group of HSV fans who were doing a choreography of straw dolls in the St. Pauli look hanging in the city. A stink bomb attack at Bahrenfeld S-Bahn station, where the majority of guest fans arrived. Some normal Derby folklore, some unfortunately also beyond that. The police were in action with 1500 forces, but measured by the fears it remained quiet. Also off the pitch.

Coach Titz could be in trouble

Especially in the first half, it was more of a game that nobody wanted to lose than one that someone wanted to win. “Both teams were busy not conceding a goal,” said Khaled Narey. The disastrous HSV appearance against Regensburg was followed by two serious goalless draws.

How much risk is good for the relegated team? The team seems insecure.

“One can have the impression that the ease of the offensive game has also been lost,” said coach Christian Titz, who is aware that after only two points from previous games, the team is grumbling again. 14 points, temporarily third place, the season is still long. It remains the realization: HSV also has problems in the second league to play out clear goal chances against low-lying opponents. But if you want to move up, you have to win matches.

Lewis Holtby was furious after the game. He was the only player the journalists in the third and fourth row in the interview zone understood. After three goalless games, do you want to question everything again? “In one game you’re the saviour, and then it’s back on again,” said Holtby, who complained that “a lot of negative things come from outside, and that makes me so aggressive”. After all, HSV has a lot of young players, “and they get all that.” And now? “Keep calm, keep your mouth shut, keep working,” says Holtby.

Patience, the goals would already fall, HSV goalkeeper Julian Pollersbeck believes. “We’ve got five or six crazy people ahead,” says Pollersbeck, who had saved at least one point for his team with an act of rescue in injury time: “That looked more spectacular than it was.” Cenk Sahin had been lobbing from 35 metres and his ball had almost landed in the very goal that Asamoah hit seven years ago.

Hamburg’s search for identity

In 2011, the HSV was still a big player, had really great players and had reached the European semi-finals twice in a row. The roles were clearly distributed, in one team Ruud van Nistelrooy started, in the other – with all due respect – Ralph Gunesch. What’s particularly astonishing is that expectations at HSV remain high. A victory was firmly planned. St. Pauli only scored one point less this season. Cashmio Casino is the casino for everyone because it suits everybody’s expectation.

“Try it so desperately (sic!), our size is carved in stone.” That was written on the choreography in the north curve. The greatest heroes of the club’s history were enthroned above, with all the trophies that the club won in another millennium. If you can’t find an identity in the present, you’re looking in the past. You never make it to the second league like that. But maybe you’ll get more than just another chance to win back the city championship.

No victory again! Only Zieler convinces at VfB

Playingly poor, weak in the end: VfB Stuttgart, who started the season with European Cup dreams, is still waiting for their first victory. The harmless Swabians could not get past a disappointing 0:0 against the courageous promoted Fortuna Düsseldorf, the air for coach Tayfun Korkut is a bit thinner.

Stuttgart had a hard time in the game forward as in the matches before and missed some surprises. Düsseldorf acted from a safe defensive and was even closer to the trio. But 2014 World Champion Ron-Robert Zieler in the VfB goal saved his opponents with strong parades before the next bankruptcy.

“I have respect for the performance of Düsseldorf, they played it very courageously. It was partly wild from us, we should have played more cleverly, especially as we could have used the three points well”, said the outstanding goalkeeper at Eurosport: “We have to put our heads together and form a unit, we have to score points”.

“Everyone knows that we have the right to win the game,” Korkut had said immediately before the game at Eurosport. His line-up reflected this: With Chadrac Akolo instead of Dennis Aogo in midfield, he opted for the somewhat more offensive orientation that many critics had long wished for.

However, in front of 54,410 spectators in the Mercedes-Benz Arena this was hardly noticeable. Although Stuttgart was anxious to take over the game, it remained poor in terms of play. Akolo, unlike Joker, did not bring the hoped for momentum at the 3:3 in Freiburg and had to make way for Erik Thommy after less than an hour.

Düsseldorf, surprisingly formed by coach Friedhelm Funkel with a defensive chain of four and captain Adam Bodzek as a “sixth”, had few problems with this VfB. At first, danger threatened only from a distance.

But Fortuna was not only in the back, as feared by Korkut. It went also engaged to the front, often over Benito Raman on the left side. Raman was Funkel’s only new player after the 2:1 against Hoffenheim. Marvin Ducksch, the only leader, on the other hand, rarely found a real connection to his colleagues.

For Stuttgart, the committed Nicolas Gonzalez (34th) and Mario Gomez (41st) missed the possible lead. Düsseldorf was very close to 0:1 shortly after the break, when Kaan Ayhan (51st) and Marcel Sobottka (52nd) failed at the well reacting goalkeeper.

With increasing duration the game became more wild, hotter, more open. Both teams were now looking for the Lucky Punch. Gonzalez almost landed him (69.). On the other side, Alfredo Morales also failed against Zieler (82.), who also saved against Ayhan in highest trouble (87.).  Genesis Casino has a wide variety of games.

Cologne wins 2:0 – goal no. 8 for Terodde!

The 1. FC Cologne has at least for one night taken the lead of the table in the 2. soccer Bundesliga. The relegated won to the prelude of the sixth matchday at the still victorious SV Sandhausen 2:0 (1:0) and made amends for the 3:5 home defeat against SC Paderborn last Sunday. With 13 points, FC took the lead ahead of Hamburger SV (12) and Greuther Fürth (11).

Louis Schaub (45th) with an artistic side-fall puller and Simon Terodde (54th) with his eighth goal of the season scored for the Cologne team, who had also won the last match in Sandhausen in February 2014 1-0.

On Sunday, the HSV (against Regensburg) and Fürth (in Heidenheim) can pass Cologne again, already on Saturday the VfL Bochum (in Kiel) and Darmstadt 98 (in Dresden), both with ten points, have the chance to first place. Sandhausen (2) is 17th and would already be new tail light with a draw of the MSV Duisburg on Sunday against Aue.

“We know that we got too many goals, and we know that we can defend it better”, Cologne coach Markus had said at the beginning before the kick-off at Sky, and in fact the guests stood in front of 13,237 spectators in the Hardtwaldstadion safer than against Paderborn. However, the SVS also defended its goal for a long time sovereign, only an unnecessary ball loss shortly before the break finally led to the worth seeing leading goal by Schaub.

In the second half Sandhausen showed himself further engaged, but harmless. Cologne had everything under control at the latest after Teroddes goal.

St. Pauli prevailed at the former club of coach Markus Kauczinski with 1:0 (0:0). After a 6-0 defeat in Bochum, Ingolstadt thus experienced the next matchday forgetting, is 13th with only five points and also lost Konstantin Kerschbaumer (77th) with a yellow-red card. St. Pauli climbed to seventh place with nine points.

The substitute Ryo Miyaichi, who had not played in a second league game since May 2017 due to injuries, saved the Paulians in the 82nd minute. After a high ball from substitute Ersin Zehir, Japan’s opponent Benedikt Gimber sent off the ball and headed it into the goal before Marco Knaller.

The first half was marked by inaccuracies and small fouls. Both teams did not play any compelling goal chances. The hosts, whose coach Stefan Leitl has been criticized since the debacle against Bochum at the latest, have to wait for their second win of the season.

Thomas Pledl had the best chance in the 59th minute for the Ingolstadters, who had to play from the 77th minute on inferior after Kerschbaumer was put off the field, but his header after Paulo Otavio’s cross went just over the goal of guestkeeper Robin Himmelmann. For the Kiezkicker it was the first victory after three consecutive defeats. Read this if you want to know more about Grand Ivy.
